Maui Fish And Pasta At Whaler’s Village in Kaanapali, Maui

Staying on the westside of Maui and looking for a place to eat?  There is a new restaurant that we would like to recommend. It is the Maui Fish and Pasta.  It is located in the Whaler’s Village where Cain and Taro used to be.  You can see in the photo below that the view is magnificent. You can enjoy the ocean while you eat!

Aside from the great view, they have a delicious meal as well!  We ate there for lunch when we attend the Wa’a Kiakahi Festival

The photo above is the “Farm To Table Kula Beet Salad”. Locally grown delicious sweet baby beet (yes, so sweet!) in aged sherry vinaigrette tossed with Ho Farms tomatoes, Haricot Verts, Cucumber, Spinach & House-made Ricotta.  This salad so refreshingly delicious.

Now for the entree: Pan Roasted Hawaiian Swordfish and House-made Linguini.  This fresh made pasta was tossed with Chinese Dan Dan sauce and sugar snap peas, shitake mushroom, cilantro and Ho Farms tomatoes. The fish was cooked just right with the right amount of panko.

Both the fish and the pasta are sooooo delicious! No wonder they named the restaurant Maui Fish & Pasta – they are so onolicous there 🙂

For dessert, we had the Buttermilk Panna Cotta with Honey Butter and Upcountry Berries. Oh I can have 5 of these desserts! I love how light it is and yet so delicately tasty!

We really highly recommend this Maui Fish & Pasta Restaurant at Kaanapali.  Give it a try on your next visit at the Whaler’s Village on the westside of Maui.

Alan Wong’s Amasia Opened on Maui at the Grand Wailea

Amasia Maui Grand OpeningThe island of Maui celebrated the grand opening of a new restaurant, Alan Wong’s Amasia. Elevating the standards of cuisine, style and service, Alan Wong’s Amasia is a collaboration between Chef Alan Wong, a founder of Hawaii Regional Cuisine and Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort.

Alan Wong’s Amasia is tucked inside Grand Wailea’s Japanese garden surrounded by 800 tons of rock from Mt. Fuji and a pond filled with koi and turtles. Reminiscent of a teahouse in Kyoto, the original structure was built in Japan and brought to Maui in 1990. Following a $3 million renovation, the beautifully restored restaurant features private tatami rooms, a formal dining area, a cocktail lounge, a sushi bar and a robata for grilled delicacies. The bar offers private label wines and sakes and creative cocktails inspired by its global menu.

Amasia

Amasia by definition is the converging of continents. The cuisine in Alan Wong’s Amasia showcases Maui’s best bounty from land and sea, melding them with the different flavors and cooking techniques of cultures from the East and West.

Seabury Hall Craft Fair Tomorrow May 10, 2012

Remember when we posted the some of the upcoming events on Maui for the month of May and June? We did not have the Seabury Hall Craft Fair on the list, but we actually highly recommend it.  We just did not have the details when we posted a month ago.  Well, we have some information now, we look forward to going there tomorrow!

Experience the splendor of springtime in upcountry Maui at the Seabury Hall Craft Fair, a tradition for Maui families for 38 years. It’s always held on the day before Mother’s Day, and provides the perfect opportunity to pick up a unique gift for Mom while the entire family has fun.

The juried craft fair features the work of more than 100 local artisans. There’s also live entertainment throughout the day by Gail Swanson, Dr. Nat and Rio Ritmo, Haiku Hillbillies, Marty Dread, and other popular entertainers.

The fair includes great food, a bakery with delicious treats, silent and live auctions, games and bouncy rides for the kids, a plant sale and more. 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 480 Olinda Road, just one mile above Makawao Town. Fabianis, A New Place To Eat In Kihei

 One of the frequently asked questions we have from our guests is “where to eat?”  For many who had been regularly visiting Maui, they tell us that they want to know what’s new and where do locals eat.  Today, we have a guest Blogger, @DJSmook, who shared with us his review of this new restaurant in Kihei known as Fabianis:

Fabianis is  a little bakery and restaurant in Kihei. It is located in between Kihei Gas and Kihei Storage on East Lipoa Street.  Their address is 95 East Lipoa Street for those of you that want to locate them on your GPS and smart phone apps.  You can give it a call at (808) 874-0888.  It is open for Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, and Supper.  You can pay in cash or any major credit card or debit cards. It is  open from 7A till 12 A daily.

Fabiani’s is an awesome place to have breakfast, brunch, lunch, and supper.  It has  good drinks over there also and prices that won’t blow a hole in your wallets or credit cards.  This is a place with the local people on their mind.  One thing I really like about this place is its affordable prices.  

 On their breakfast  menu, the prices do not exceed $8 for what they have on that menu.  Drinks are reasonably priced for breakfast.  On their lunch menu, the prices do not exceed $11 for what it has on that menu for that time.  Drinks are affordable at this time also.  The supper menu does not exceed $15 dollars.  

Fabiani’s have great pizzas. They have awesome choices on the menu to accommodate most people’s needs.  For example, they have gluten free pastas and sauces available for people who can’t tolerate gluten.  Fabiani’s have great soups, salads, and sandwiches for you too.  

 Oh and who can’t resist desert?  They have scrumptious bakery goodness!  

 

I had the Chicken Pesto Panini with a side of Salad and for desert their awesome Red Velvet Cake.  I have to say, the Panini was so wonderful.  It was perfectly cooked and prepared, tasted awesome, and fills you up.  The Red Velvet Cake is large enough to feed a couple or a group of three people!  It’s that big!  The cake was so moist and very velvety when you eat it.  It just melts in your mouth that’s how good it is.  They have awesome pizza specials and other great specials on certain days too.

 It’s a very family (ohana) friendly restaurant.  Earlier today when I was there for lunch, I saw a mini play group of kids there enjoying some pizza with their parents and friends.  The staff are so kind to those groups of people.  The atmosphere at Fabiani’s in great!  The music they play during the lunch hour is great and it’s not too noisy, just enough so you can hear others and not over power peoples voices. There was a great mix of tourists and locals in there and even had some Maui Police officers, Fire Fighters, and Paramedics in the mix too!  

Soon they will be having an outside seating for patrons.  Fabiani’s has a high quality service. They really take care of you while you are there.  The servers and hosts check up on you every 8-10 minutes asking how everything is and give you unlimited refills on soft drinks, coffee, and tea.  

 You won’t be sorry after you’ve tried this place out.  If you have any questions about Fabiani’s Bakery and Pizzeria, give them a call and they will help you out!

May and June Events on Maui – 2012

Raw Onion Eating Contest
1. Maui Onion Festival  at the Whalers Village in Kaanapali – Saturday, May 5   There are onions. And then there are Maui Onions. Believed by many to be the sweetest onions in the whole wide world, these glorious bulbs are the star of our annual festival.  The Maui Onion Festival has been a signature event at Whalers Village since 1990. It’s dedicated to the cultivation and promotion of the world-famous Maui Onion and is attended by thousands of visitors and residents every year.

2. Maui Matsuri, Saturday, May 12th, 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm University of Hawaii – Maui College  The 12th Annual Maui Matsuri scheduled for May 11-12, honors Japanese cultural traditions with its annual theme of “Kodomo No Tame Ni (for the sake of the children).”  Young and old alike will delight in this year’s offerings of art, entertainment, contests, crafts and food.  A free Family Movie Night will be held on Friday, May 11, in the University of Hawaii – Maui College Student Center (Pilina Building).  The Matsuri festivities continue on Saturday, May 12, from 2 to 9 p.m. at University of Hawaii – Maui College, where Matsuri organizers will transform the grassy knolls of the campus into a bunkamura (Japanese village), dotted with stalls selling mouth watering goodies and a variety of crafts. The demonstration and entertainment stages will showcase the best of Maui County’s Japanese and Okinawan talent as well as traditional martial arts and eating contests.  Contestants are  also being sought for the saimin and natto eating contests, and the costume cosplay (costume play) contest.  Keiki have a world of their own at the Kodomo Korner where tons of hands-on free craft activities such as origami and gyotaku (Japanese fish printing) will be available.   Japanese superheroes Kikaida and his friends headline the event at 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.  The festival ends with a community obon dance starting from 7:30 pm.  The community is invited to wear a hapi coat or kimono and join in on the dancing. Admission to the festival and parking are free.

3rd Annual Maui Brewers Festival

Maui Brewers Festival 2012 – Saturday, May 19, 3:00 PM til 7:00 PM at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center (MACC) Pavilion/Amphitheater  Maui Brewers Festival showcases the best craft beers made in Hawai`i and beyond. Join hosts Maui Brewing Company and Maui Arts & Cultural Center for a leisurely day of tasting beers from two dozen craft breweries, sampling appetizers from Maui’s popular restaurants, live entertainment with island bands and prize giveaways. Paid general admission includes eight 4 oz. samples of micro-brews and imports, unlimited island-style dishes and parking. 4. Ka‘anapali Beach Resort will welcome 60 of the best watermen and women who practice ancient Hawaiian canoe sailing at the 7th annual Wa‘a Kiakahi Festival, June 1-3. Events will include traditional Hawaiian welcome and farewell ceremonies, sailing canoe rides, celestial navigation and history talks, and race viewing. Created by the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association (HSCA), Wa‘a Kiakahi is anevent dedicated to traditional Hawaiian canoe sailing and the education of its history.  Contrary to ordinary outrigger canoe paddling, HSCA honors how the ancient Hawaiians actually traveled between the islands: members do not make crew changes during races and they travel every island channel that connects the Hawaiian islands. The mission of the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association (HSCA) is to learn, revive,educate and practice the ancient Hawaiian skills and values as they relate to sailingcanoes and the Hawaiian culture. Mango Cheesecake Recipe

Crust:

1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/3 cups graham cracker crumbs
1 1/3 cups unsweetened coconut
3 tbsp. granulated sugar
2 tsp. lime zest
1 cup (2 sticks/8 oz./226g) unsalted butter, melted

Fruit Filling:
2 tbsp. (1/4 stick/1 oz./28g) unsalted butter
2 fresh mangoes, peeled and sliced
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp. lime zest
1 tbsp. lime juice
1 tsp. fresh ginger, grated
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg

Cheesecake Filling:
1 lb. (two 8 oz. packages/16 oz./453g) cream cheese, room temperature
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 1/2 tbsp. all-purpose flour
1/8 tsp. salt
1/2 cup fresh mango puree
2 tbsp. sour cream
1 tbsp. lime juice
1/2 tbsp. vanilla extract
3 eggs

Mango Peach Glaze:
2 Mangoes sliced
1 Jar Peach (fruit glaze)

Cooking Process
1. For Crust:
Preheat oven to 350°F/180°C. Combine flour, graham crumbs and coconut with sugar and lime zest. Stir in melted butter and blend until even and crumbly. Press into the bottom and an inch up the sides of an ungreased 9-inch springform pan. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until browned around edges and allow to cool. Wrap bottom of pan will foil and place in a baking dish that has at least a 2-inch lip. Reduce oven temperature to 300°F/150°C.2. To Prepare Fruit Filling:
Melt butter in a sauté pan over medium heat. Add mangoes, sugar, lime zest, lime juice, ginger and nutmeg. Sauté for 5 to 6 minutes, until fruit is tender and juices have evaporated. Allow to cool for 10 minutes and spread into bottom of baked crust.

3. Cheesecake Filling:
Beat cream cheese in a mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or with electric beaters until smooth and fluffy, scraping down the sides of the bowl often. Add sugar, flour and salt and beat again scraping down the sides of the bowl often. Mix in mango purée, sour cream, lime juice and vanilla and blend well. At this point, there should be no lumps – if there are, beat again until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, and scraping bowl thoroughly. Pour cheesecake into prepared pan.  Take cheesecake in baking dish to oven door. Pour boiling water around pan to come up halfway. ** I would strongly recommend using a cheesecake moat to prevent your cheesecake from getting ruined.  Instead of putting your springform pan in an aluminum roaster pan, you would put it in the cheesecake moat which will protect it from water damage and provide the necessary water barrier to produce perfect cheesecakes!

Bake for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Halfway through cooking, crack the oven door for 10 minutes then complete cooking. Turn off oven, crack oven door, and let cheesecake cool to room temperature. Chill overnight in springform pan.

4. Mango Glaze
Slice peaches into various sizes.  Place in pattern on top of cheesecake. Pour glaze over fruit.

5. To serve, run a paring knife around the edge of the cheesecake and remove ring.

Makes 12 to 16 servings.

April 2012 Events On Maui

It’s almost halfway through March. It’s time for us to highlight some of the events happening next month (April) to give you ample time to plan. Here’s our event picks:

Opening Ceremony

1. Celebration of the Arts – This prestigious event is held at the Ritz Carlton in Kapalua on April 6 weekend. The Ritz Carlton had been hosting this cultural event that pay tribute to the people, arts, and traditions of Hawaii. There will be seminars on Hawaiin current events, arts and crafts, hula performances and other exhibits. The closing celebration culminates in a Paina and entertainment by asd amazing presentation by Ulalela.

2. Maui County Agricultural Festival – This fun family event will be held at the Maui Tropical Plantation on April 7. Maui AgFest aims to bring awarenenss to the local agriculture industry through various aspects of the event: exhibits, cooking and baking demonstrations, contest and also through music and dance.

3. Banyan Tree Birthday party – The 139th birthday of the Lahaima town’s famous Banyan Tree will be celebrated with a birthday cake on April 21. Artists playing nature artworkds, hands-on activities for children and multi-cultural entertainment.

4. East Maui Taro Festival. Have you tasted at “taro” yet?  If not, it will be a great time to taste this Hawaiian staple at the East Maui Taro Festival. Enjoy the all day festival on Saturday, April 28, with live music and hula, arts and crafts, and ancient games, food booth and taro planting demonstrations

March 2012 is almost here!  Do you have some big plans this month? Or are you like me, no definite plans yet but always on the look out for fun things to do.  I looked at the Maui Events Calendar and there are four (4) events that I thought are worth highlighting and sharing here.

Wailuku First Friday March 2012Wailuku First Friday “Zumba Wailuku” March 2, 2012, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Wailuku First Friday celebrates its love for community and health with Hawaii Medical Service Association’s Zumba Wailuku. All of Maui is invited to come! Entertainment includes:

  • Non-stop Zumba at the Wailuku Banyan Tree Park
  • Bryan and Friends on the Maui Thing Stage, 6 p.m.
  • Gene and Shea Argel in front of Cafe ‘O Lei

Ulupalakua Remembers March 4, 2012 11am to 4pm – Ulupalakua hosts a Sunday Drive events quarterly, to share and honor different aspects of this unique historic area.  Each event features live music on the beautiful grounds of Maui’s Winery, lunch specials at the Ulupalakua Ranch Store, complimentary wine tasting and an opportunity to learn more about the area’s history and culture.
This weekend they are celebrating the rich heritage of this historic ranchland in an event called “Ulupalakua Remembers”.

Lahaina Whale and Ocean Arts Festival  March 10 – 11, 2012
Lahaina celebrates the annual migration of Pacific Humpback whales with ocean arts festivities. On Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5pm in Banyan Tree Park Several Whale Research groups will educate visitors and locals alike. Artists display their best marine-themed art for sale, while Hawaiian musicians and hula troupes entertain. Enjoy a kids ocean art contest, whale photo displays. Free admission.

Haiku Ho’olaule’a & Flower Festival Sat., March 31st, 2012 9am – 4:30pm
The mission of the Haiku Ho’olaule’a & Flower Festival  is to celebrate the past and present of the community of Haiku while building for the future.  The festival highlights local agriculture, arts, crafts and restaurants.  The rich cultural heritage is evident in the entertainment, historical displays and kupuna talks.  The festival is a collaborative effort of the Haiku School PTA, the Haiku Boys & Girls Club and the Haiku Community Association.  The monies raised by the event are used primarily to support the educational enrichment programs at Haiku School.  Programs such as art enrichment, creative movement, music, physical education, field trips, playground equipment, classroom allowances and bottled water.  The Boys & Girls Club and Haiku Community Association also benefit.  Wherever you are from we hope you enjoy this unique Haiku Community event.  Cost: Free Admission

  1. Ingredients:
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 Tablespoons Flour
  • 1 Teaspoon Cornstarch
  • 4 tbsp sugar
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 Teaspoons Coconut Milk
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Coconut Extract
  • Cooking Process:  Preheat oven to 300 °F.Beat egg white and oil. Add remaining ingredients and mix well.  Grease cookie sheet well anddrop approximately 1 teaspoon of batter onto cookiesheet and using a circular motion, form a circle.  You can add more batter and make giant fortune cookies if you desire.Bake for aboutt 10 minutes or until the outer edges become brown. Remove one cookie from oven with spatula or metal spoon. I would recommend using gloves.  Watch video to see proper folding and handling method.
