January & February 2012 Events on Maui

1. Hyundai Tournament Of Champions At Kapalua

Tournament officials at the 2012 Hyundai Tournament of Champions began announcing player commitments on the tournament’s Facebeook Page this week as 2011 PGA TOUR winners David Toms, Jonathan Byrd, Mark Wilson, Chris Kirk  and Nick Watney all announced their plans to compete. The 2012 PGA TOUR season kicks off January 5-9 at The Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort with this unique winners-only event.

The commitment announcements began on Tuesday, as defending champion and five-time PGA TOUR winner Jonathan Byrd hosted a teleconference with local and national media followed by a chat with fans on Facebook. Byrd, who won last year in a playoff against Robert Garrigus , finished the 2011 season a career-best No. 27 in the final FedExCup standings. (Full article at PGATours.com)

2. Maui Oceanfront Marathon

The 4th Maui Oceanfront Marathon running on January 22nd between Wailea and Lahaina. Other runs include an early start for Marathon Walkers, Half Marathon, 15K, 10K, and 5K. 3. TEDxMaui: The Courage to Dream

Spend the day with 600 of the most passionate, intelligent, open-minded people engaging in powerful ideas worth sharing!  TEDxMaui will be on Sunday, Jan. 22nd, 2012  8:00am – 6:00pm, with reception to folloAt the  Castle Theatre, Maui Arts & Cultural Center

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is call TEDx (name), where x=independently organized TED event. At our TEDx (name) event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. 4. Whale Day Celebration and Maui’s Parade of Whales

One of Maui’s most popular festivals on Maui is the whale day , this free, all-day celebration honors the humpback whales that come to Maui each winter will be on Saturday, February 18, 2012. Last year, more than 18,000 Maui residents and visitors attended. The day features live entertainment by some of Hawaii’s top performers, great food by Maui restaurants, activities and bouncy rides for kids, a huge “Made on Maui”    artisans fair, environmental displays and more. It begins at 9:00 am with Maui’s Parade of Whales along South Kihei Road and continues through 6:00 pm at oceanside Kalama Park, on South Kihei Road, South Maui. 5. 7th Annual Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational

Maui’s premier plein air painting event, the annual Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational, returns on February 18-25, 2012.  Now in its 7th year, this invitational will welcome 25 of the finest plein air painters from Hawaii and U.S. mainland to paint on location around the island of Maui. Visitors have numerous opportunities to meet and talk with the artists. Events will include a lecture on plein air painting, a quick draw, sunset paint-out, a gala reception and an exhibition of all the works created with the opportunity to purchase the paintings.  The invitational will also conduct two workshops by participating artists.
